A message from our Recreation Programmer, Ron Suzuki on the NBA Press Conference that occurred on October 3rd to celebration the grand reopening of Strathcona's gymnasium
Our gym was closed from August 18th –September 27th but everyone I've talked to enthusiastically agreed it was worth the wait. All the walls and the decals were repainted, the adjustable backboards were replaced with glass, and 2 additional backboards were installed. The gymnasium floor was the biggest job as about 40 damaged boards had to be replaced along with years and years of built up wax had to be sanded away to uncover the natural color of the wood. All the lines were repainted with additional lines added for the 2 new backboards .The floor received 3 coats which will last a good 2 years, the new surface makes the gym so much bigger and brighter. In addition, 40 high quality Spalding Balls were donated to the program. The Grand Re- Opening of the Gym was a very busy event packed day. In attendance were representatives from the NBA, NBA Canada, Bell Canada, Mayor Gregor Robertson, and players from the Toronto Raptors. Jennifer Ju, who started playing Strathcona Basketball in Grade 5 and is now a recent graduate from Thompson Rivers University where she was a top CIS player, was the Master of Ceremonies. The Ceremonies ended with a Basketball Clinic for a selected group of our youngest players put on by the Toronto Raptors.
The newly renovated gym was enthusiastically received by all our coaches ,players, and parents. Everyone has taken a personal pride in their gym and are still in awe of the floor and the Glass Backboards. Presently, we are signing up new players in every team and a huge expansion of participants in our Clinic Programs. We take pride that the NBA Chose our program and I have to thank all the coaches, the players, their families, and all the amazing partners who made this amazing renovation happen.
